The Jolly Rancher Candy Company was founded in Golden, Colorado, by Bill and Dorothy Harmsen in 1949. They called the company Jolly Rancher to suggest a hospitable, western company. The company originally made ice cream, chocolate and hard candy. As hard candy sales grew, however, they began to concentrate on developing their "Famous for Flavor" line of hard candies. In 1966, the Harmsens sold Jolly Rancher to Beatrice Foods, but the family continued to be involved in the day-to-day operation of the business. Leaf purchased Jolly Rancher in 1983. Hershey Foods Corporation acquired the Leaf North American confectionery operations from Huhtamaki Oy of Helsinki, Finland in 1996.

1949 - Jolly Rancher Candy Company founded.

1966 - Jolly Rancher sold to Beatrice Foods.

1983 - Leaf acquires Jolly Rancher.

1996 - Hershey acquires Leaf North America including JOLLY RANCHER candy brands.

1997 - Hershey introduces JOLLY RANCHER Sugar Free Hard Candy.

1997 - Hershey introduces JOLLY RANCHER Jelly Beans.

1999 - JOLLY RANCHER Jelly Beans formula was improved to intensify fruit flavor.

1999 - Hershey introduces JOLLY RANCHER Lollipops.

2001 - Hershey introduces JOLLY RANCHER Fruit Chew Lollipops.

2001 - Hershey introduces JOLLY RANCHER Fruit Chews Candy.

2002 - Blue Raspberry is added to the JOLLY RANCHER Hard Candy flavor assortment.

2003 - Hershey introduces convenient Blister Pack for on-the-go JOLLY RANCHER Hard Candy enjoyment.

2004 - Hershey introduces JOLLY RANCHER SCREAMING SOURS Candies.

2004 - Bold Fruit Smoothie and Fruit 'n' Sour flavors of hard candy are added in a peg bag.

2004 - Hershey introduces Creepy Fruity shaped lollipops for Halloween.

2004 - Hershey introduces JOLLY RANCHER ROCKS Hard Candies, bite-size candies with bold JOLLY RANCHER flavor.

2005 - Hershey introduces new Bold Fruit Smoothie JOLLY RANCHER Jelly Beans.
